Credit crunch results in counselling calls increase

Not only are our bank balances feeling the pinch in this current economic climate, but so too is our mental health.

Samaritans has revealed it is experiencing an increase in calls from people suffering from stress as a direct result of the credit crunch.

Their Central London branch received an extra 1,000 calls during August and September this year – a 25 per cent increase on the same months last year.

Terrence Collis, from Samaritans, said: "We have had an increase in the number of calls that we are receiving and it would seem likely that it is down to the stress of the current financial climate with many people worried about the impact on their lives."

Shaun Kelly, outreach and communications co-ordinator at the Central London branch, said: "Debt is known to contribute to emotional distress. It is really important for people to talk to someone about how they are feeling rather than keeping worries to themselves."

Many of Westfield Health’s health cash plans offer a 24-hour counselling and advice line, which enables policyholders to speak to a counsellor, lawyer or medical adviser at any time in complete confidence.

Westfield’s corporate Foresight and Chamber Plans also offer up to six face-to-face counselling sessions, which allow policyholders to talk through issues in person with a trained counsellor.
