Transplant Games honour Westfield Health

Westfield Health has received a full set of medals in honour of the company’s title sponsorship of this year’s British Transplant Games.

The Games, which were held in Sheffield in August, were the most successful ever and saw more than 800 transplant athletes taking part in 18 different events. The aim of the Games was to raise awareness of organ donation and transplantation, and a staggering 28,751 people to date have signed up to the NHS Organ Donor Register in the Sheffield area since the Games were launched earlier this year.

Westfield was involved as a sponsor when the city hosted the Games in 1995 and continued its support as title sponsor this year.

Graham Moore, Westfield Chairman, and Jill Davies, Chief Executive, received a framed set of commemorative medals from Games Chairman Andrew Raftery to thank them for their support.

Graham said: “We were delighted to sponsor the British Transplant Games and will display these medals with pride. They were an inspiration and a great way to raise awareness of organ donation. The Games provided a real showcase of the benefits of organ donation and proved that transplantees can lead a normal and active life again after transplantation.

“The Games also provided a tremendous opportunity for the people of Sheffield to show that we really care. I carry a donor card myself and would encourage everyone to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register and be a hero by giving the gift of life.

“Westfield Health supports many NHS and medically related charities and I can think of no better use of our money than to have helped to increase the number of organ donors in this city.”

In South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire alone, hundreds of people are waiting for a new heart, liver, lung, kidney or pancreas to give them a chance of life.

Tragically, a severe shortage of donor organs means that as many as one in three people on the waiting list are likely to die before having a life-saving operation.

About 8,000 people are on the NHS waiting list at any one time, a figure that is increasing annually by about eight per cent.

The total number of organ transplants last year was 3,087 and around 1,000 people died while waiting for a compatible heart, liver, kidney or lung.
