Workers feel the stress as working hours increase

Fundraising at SHCT

British workers feeling the pressure of the credit crunch now work an average of 43.5 hours a week, leading to an increase in stress levels.

A survey from Friends Provident* polling 2,700 workers found that many people are working longer hours, and in some cases getting a second job, due to financial pressures.

Almost two thirds of those questioned said they felt more stressed and run down than they did three years ago, with many admitting they do seven hours’ unpaid overtime each week.

Mark Jones, of Friends Provident, said: "Our research shows the credit crunch is having serious implications on the nation's workforce, with people working and worrying more. These are tense times, and working longer - often for little or no financial reward - will add to people's stress levels.”

November 5 was National Stress Awareness Day** which centred on the ‘Don’t Worry…Take Action!’ campaign.

The drive highlighted that worry and stress can cause disturbed sleep and eating patterns, loss of confidence, headaches, irritability and emotional distress.

Ways to avoid stress include positive thinking, relaxation exercises, physical activity –excellent for relieving tension and increasing an overall sense of wellbeing, improving the diet by eating well at regular intervals, and talking problems through with friends. Complementary therapies such as acupuncture and counselling can also be beneficial.

Most of Westfield’s health cash plans offer a 24-hour counselling and advice line, which enables policyholders to speak to a counsellor, lawyer or medical advisor at any time in complete confidence.

The Foresight and Chamber Plans also include up to six face-to-face counselling sessions, which give policyholders the opportunity to talk through issues in person with a trained counsellor.

Acupuncture, which is covered by Westfield’s therapy treatment benefit, can help people to achieve greater balance physically, mentally and emotionally***. It can improve their general sense of wellbeing, helping them to sleep better and feel calmer and more energetic.
